i just bought a radeon 7000 64mb vidoe card for my compaq presario 5000t. i installed it into the pci slot and hooked up my monitor to it. when i turned on the comp, my monitor stayed black. i then plugged my monitor back into the regular port but left my new video card in and the monitor was still black when i booted up. i can not remove the port that my monitor goes in now because it is attached to the motherboard. i have seen on this site where i have to change a jumper on my motherboard. i took my motherboard out and found a few jumpers on it, but since i did not know which one it is, i just left it alone. i have also seen something about changing my "BIOS". someone please explain to me how i go about doing this and please help with my problem.

Press del when your computer boots up to get into the bios. You should be able to disable your onboard video from there. Maybe Chipset features or something like that would be the category. As for jumpers, maybe check compaq and see what mobo you have. Look near chips that have a heatsink for possible jumpers.
Kinda hard to get into the bios when you have no video (also, Compaq doesn't use "del" - they use F9 or F10 when you see the flashing block cursor in the upper right corner). Compaq bios does not have this feature to disable onboard video anyway - if anything, there will be a motherboard jumper. Look on the inside of the case cover - a lot of Compaqs have a jumper chart on a sticker pasted on it. The jumper you want may be labeled "VGA". If there's no chart, look around Compaq's website for one for that model Presario.

ok i checked inside my case and there is not a jumper chart or anything so i went to the compaq website. i could not find anything there either. so now i need one of these jumper charts if anyone knows. also does anyone have any more suggestions. should i just take it to best buy and have them install it?!?
I show the 5000 series as being either a Celeron with onboard AGP graphics or a P4 with an AGP card. This machine is new enough that you should just be able to pop a card in and go, I think you maybe haven't properly seated the card in the slot or it's defective.

biggoof14,
I ran into the same thing a couple months ago. I was told the Compaq was a 5000 when it really was one of those 5B250 numbers.
Go back to the Compaq site and when you are scrolling down the list of Presario 5000 numbers, just keep scrolling and you will get to the 5B250 models. When you find THAT model then you will beable to go further into your search.
They do have a forum there. Sign up and ask. It could save you headaches down the road.

I usually just run my finger along the Fx keys when trying to get into the BIOS of those...
