Microphone problem

Hi here is the problem, my father in-law and I are trying to use yahoo messener to talk to each other and see each other with video. video is no problem put when we talk I can hear him clear as a bell, but he keeps telling me I'm breaking up. I have a Labtec mic and no matter how far I stand from the mic he tells me I still keep breaking up. Now when I try to talk using the built in mic on my Logitech quick cam pro 4000 I get the same thing from him.

My sound card is a sant cruz and I don't think that is the problem because it plays back music beautifully. I tried to use another Labtec mic my kis have and have the same trouble. Do you think it is the mic and should I buy another brand.

Are you really sure it's your microphone? Try another person/friend and see if they are getting the same result talking to you first. That way you are absolutley sure it's on your end.

Probably nothing at all to do with mic's.
I'll put my money on your internet connection causing the problems.
In order to TX and RX video and audio at the same time, you need really good stability of connection. Notice I didn't say a fast one, just a stable one. If packets are getting lost, and need to be retransmitted, the audio and video will get choppy. If your connection has enough bandwidth to support the video (hence no breakup), adding the audio stream to it is just too much.
Another possible problem is Yahoo messenger itself. You could do better with Netmeeting.

Hi reboot here is my problem with Netmeeting I have posted it elwhere on this fourm,but seems how you brought it up I will tell what trouble I'm having.

I have a new microphone which use a USP connection I can't seem to get Netmeeting to recognize I have a USB mic, and also when my in-law and I try to connect using Netmeeting we seem to not be able to see each other most of the time. In options I have checked Automatically Send and receive video. But if you go to tools> video the receive is grayed and I can't enable it.

My father in-law is having the same problem as I, I thought about uninstalling and reinstalling netmeeting but I can't find it in add-remove or add-remove window programs.

A USB mic? What a waste of money, so I'll eat my words about your internet connection, and tell you that I'd go get a regular minijack type mic, and give the USB mic to someone you hate...anyhow...Netmeeting is id10t proof.
If you have the hardware installed properly, and the correct drivers for your operating system, netmeeting is too easy.
I'll bet you haven't got all the updates for netmeeting from MS yet.
I have never had a problem, although I've never tried to use a USB mic, and fail to see the logic in having one.

Your right I wasted money I only bought it because I figured the other one was the problem and I wanted to try someting new (never again). Any way I went to microsoft and could not find anything for Netmeeting Updates that pertained to XP. If you know where to look that I haven't been than I would appreciate your help. As far as hardware my camera worked a couple of times with nemeeting that's it. My in-law is having the same trouble I looked where I could and can't find anything I did wrong.( but than again I no expert in sorftware and probably missed something.

Just a added note I'm returning the usb mic I found Netmeeting does not support it also reboot can you give me a step by step instruction on how to check to see if everything is set up right.

Start at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and select to view all updates. If Netmeeting is already installed, you can uninstall it there, and then after the mandatory restart, go back and get it again. Have your in-law do the same thing.
Providing you are NOT behind a firewall or router, he can just open Netmeeting, ignore the "not logged in to a blah blah", and type in your IP, and hit the call button. If you have Netmeeting open, you should get the ring. It's that simple.

Glad it all worked out in the end, even though I hate yahoo.
