refresh rate

i have a new lg 17" moniter the refresh rate was set at 60 and i changed it to 75 is this ok i guess the 60 was the default right?it works well at 75

I don't know the default settings, but both should work well.

You need to look at the documentation for your monitor. Most will refresh just fine at 75 using common resolutions. Running a monitor at refresh rates higher than their ratings can dramatically shorten their lives.

Usually you can't change to a resolution/refresh rate your monitor can't support...

The only time it will is if it can barely push it....and it causes slight damage...which isn't often.

Check with the manufactures website for update drivers for the monitor, often the update drives will allow you to run higher refresh rates.

http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/ use this utility if ure runnin NT/2k/xp and force whatever refresh rate you want....jus don't exceed what your monitor is capable of by two mutch... go way over and its bad, to mutch over and u'll jus get a screen that looks like lines and you can't see anything, Not good on the monitor, but if the screen din't go blank and ya din't hear a poping sound, your monitor still works :D theres also other simlar programs for 9x, but i don't have a link handy for one.

If you are running 2K or XP, check the box that says hide resolutions that this monitor cannot support and you will not get in trouble. I always run as high as I can get, up to and including 100 Hz, anything over that is really overkill. My present monitor (CTX PL-9) is good to 100 Hz at 1024x768, but 85 is the top end at 1280x1024. I can tolerate 75, but 85 is noticeably better and 100 is even better than that. When I work on customers' machines that are set to 60, my eyes hate me at the end of the day. If you try to set a resolution and refresh that's not supported, good monitors will just sit there and stare at you with an "out of range" message.

So it takes a major klutz to kill a monitor :D

i did what glc mentioned and it showed 85 as its highest rate and hid the rest of the values.so ill leave it at 85, i really dont see much difference from 60 to 85 but the way you all talk it must be easier on the eyes.

While I don't think it's a huge problem or even a common one I have experience to the contrary. In the past few months I have replaced three 21" Sony Monitors that were run 10 -15 hz faster than their rated redresh rate. So at a cost of Four Thousand Dollars out of my pocket it's not an experience I will forget. I'm not blaming anyone but ourselves for not reading the manuals. Our older Sony's will run the same resolution and refresh rate just fine. So I'm not trying to scare anyone but I can tell you that it can and does happen.
