ati radeon 8500

i have the ati radeon 8500, running windows me (just dropped from xp pro), and i cannot remember how to change my display setings. i really like the display settings 1024 x 768, and i remember coorectly, i thought i had 16 color. but for some reason or another, i cannot have both of those with this piece. now in the past, i did switch it to get it just right, but right now, with 1024 by 768 and 256 color, my colors just don't look right. does anyone know how to fix this? i appreciate the help

That card should to 1024 x 768 at 32 bit color. IN fact, it should do 1600 x 1200 at 32 bit color. ME doens't come with direct X8.1, so install it. In fact, you can get 8.1b now. Then, if that doesn't work, try reinstalling you video card drivers. If you still have no luck, look for the latest drivers. Some one like Hal can tell you which drivers are the best ones to get.

You also need a proper monitor definition file - "default monitor" isn't good enough. You need to set it as a plug and play monitor or get the exact file.
