converting divx to vcd

hi
i'm trying to figure out how to a divx movie, or*.avi, and burn it to a cd that can be played in a dvd player...i think it needs to be in a vcd format. can anyone help me with this? what do i need or what do i need to do? thanks

Download a FREE program called "DVDx."

This app is fantastic. It's very easy to use and you can take any DVD and convert it to either DIVX, or MPEG format.

Then you take that file and use Nero or similar burning tool to make a VCD or SVCD(depending on what your DVD supports).

DukeDiablo, does DVDx convert AVI files to VCD? i'm interested since the program i've used does that but its pretty slow at converting.

it does the job, but its takes a long time to convert a full movie.

anyone else know of any progs that convert AVI to VCD????

CCE can convert AVI to MPG1 then just burn as a VCD. Check out http://www.vcdhelp.com for more

It's gonna take a long time regardless of what you use.

There's some serious processor usage involved in compressing gigs of data (assuming the original was MPEG2 as DVDs are) down to DivX sizes, and converting it back will require a similar amount of resources.

There's no way to make it fast, in other words ;).

The program I use only converts DVD's to MPEG1, MPEG2, or AVI format. It doesn't convert AVI to MPEG, although it can convert MPEG to AVI, haha.

Then I use Nero's Burning Rom(free if you look around w/key code!) to make a VCD from the output.


Using the system in my sig, it takes around 9 hours for me to decode a two hour DVD. Then another 40 minutes to burn the two or more VCD's that are required. So I doubt that is anyone's idea of fast; however, it gets the job done...and done quite nicely.

DVDx also is nice because it has several options that improve speed depending on cpu manufacturer and how much RAM or Hard drive space you are willing to temporarily use for decoding purposes.

Make sure you set the read buffer high, like 300 MB. This way your DVD ROM drive won't be used for the entire 9+ hour process. I set it to use my hard drive at 500MB. That way it only spins up the ROM drive a handful of times.

Does this really work? Ive tried almost everything out there and the closest Ive come is perfect video and audio that are about two minutes out of sync. In fact, Ive uninstalled every ripping software app from my system.

i occasionally need to convert an avi to vcd and figured it was my system that was slowing down the process. But from the info in this thread, it's just normal. i can live with it.

It works, really nicely too. I play the VCD's I make on both a DVD player(Sony model) and a Sega Dreamcast.

Now, you can't expect to have DVD quality picture/sound on a regular CD, but you do get decent results.

The DVDx program also outputs in Dolby, 5.1, and even DTS depending on the original DVD source.

DVDx is the easiest program I have found for this process and I highly recommend it.

Have you tried making SVCD's with DVDx? How is the picture quality? Is it a very fast encoder? I'm hesitant to use anything other than CCE 2.5 or TMPGenc for an encoder.

I have made a SVCD and the quality is great.... I cant remember what programs I used .... but they are on VCDHELP.COM.... it was the first time and the last.... it took me around 10 .... I rather buy the DVD then spend that much time doing it again.... :)

I have made both MPEG1(VCD) and MPEG2(SVCD) with DVDx producing fine results. Just make sure your DVD player supports the version you choose to output in. Like I said, it takes around 10 hours to do the job in VCD...SVCD takes a bit longer. Unless you have a Cray supercomputer or something, I think the process will take a good while no matter what software you are using.

I agree, the novelty of making VCD's kind of wears off; however, it's still nice to know I can do it anytime...

I'm in no way encouraging piracy. I understand that I may have misled you with my replies; however, I have only made VCD's of DVD movies I own. I use the VCD's to entertain me on long trips (playing them on a Non-DVD laptop) or playing them in my Sega Dreamcast.

I discourage piracy in any form. If everyone paid for software, etc., then I strongly believe our current level of technology would be at an even higher level.
