What is a safe temp. to run my AMD XP 2000+?. I want to set the alarm in my bios, but I would like to hear some of your opinions from experience.
Thanks!

Hi,

What is the room temperature where u live?
Are you using standard Heatsink fan?
Have you got fans in the case aswell?
What are your temps at present at idle and load?
Are you overclocking, or planning to OC it?

My XP1800 would run fairly hot when I had the stock HSF, so I had set it to 60*C. During summer I did hit it a few times. My idle temp back then was 50+*C!
Whatever your idle is, add another 10-15 degrees and that should be your maximum roughly. Now, with a good HSF and case ventilation, I never go above 40*C load (check sig 4 details)

AMD run quite hot, so good ventilation, and at least one intake and exhaust helps the airflow..pretty much a priority with the AMD's
There are so many variable factors, that it is hard to give you a good temp to choose... but you dont want to be going in the 60+*C range too much.

Hi brentconn,

It all depends on your particular setup and the ambient room temperature the PC is kept in.

If you're using a really good heatsink (like the Thermalright AX-7), your case is equipped with the appropriate amount of case fans (at least 1 front intake fan and 1 rear exhaust fan) and your cables are neatly bundled out of the air paths around the CPU heatsink, you may see CPU temps in the 40's. If you're using the stock AMD heatsink and don't have any case fans installed, you could be looking at temps in the 50's.

AMD (and INTEL) say their CPU's can safely perform up to 90 degrees C (194 degrees F). You might want to set the temp alarm between 60 and 70 degrees C to give yourself some leeway.

In the BIOS disable the Temp warning, but Enable the Temp shutdown feature. The set it at the highest one, which I believe is 76 C. This is still almost 20 C below the max temp of the CPU.

If you have a decent case and a good room temp....it shouldn't get near 50°C

Thanks for the advice. I am going to run two additional fans, one in front and one in back. My HS fan is nothing fancy, so after the fan installation I will monitor the temp but I think I saw I saw the temp at 46* C with the case open and idle. This is my first ever build and I'm bacically still in diapers. Bundling the wires neatly is a good idea. Thanks.

Hi brentconn,

That temp of 46C is good, but with the case sides on and no fans I think it would creep up to over 50C (still nothing to worry about). You would really have to do something if your system keeps locking up and freezing all the time (that would indicate a heat problem).

AMD does recommend at least 1 intake and 1 exhaust fan for Athlon systems, so you're moving in the right direction.

Congrats on putting together your first computer :D.

HI,

Yeah you got decent temps there, considering its standard HSF.
Oh yeah, congrats on your build....wise choice of board!!! same as mine!

Tidying up the cables and power connections, and maybe investing in some rounded IDE cables and floppy cable can buy you a few degrees aswell.

The major factor for my setup was the AX-7, it dropped my temps nicely. Also, the AX-7 takes a 80mm fan on top, so that also is a boost to the airflow directly on the CPU

Also, get some nice fans, with good CFM rates.. YOu want as much air coming in their, and as much hot air exhausting out.

Good luck

im using the stock fan and HS and my temp is 43C in use! i think AMD's stock stuff is fine, its a 2200 XP by the way.

good ventilation for the case is the most important IMO

My Athlon XP 1700+ w/Thermaltake Volcano7 HSF idles at 37-38C and maxes at 43C under load. That's with two 80mm exhaust and one 80mm intake fan.
