I want too install the latest XP driver for my new Abit KX7-333 MB but my manual nor my driver CD rom doesn't mention Windows XP. The only setups for driver installation on the CD ROM are:

VIA 4 in 1 driver or

HPT 37X driver

I don't have raid so the HPT 37X driver is NA

Should I just install VIA chipset drivers and be done with it or what?

Hi brentconn,

WinXP has built in support for VIA chipsets already and you really don't need to install the VIA 4-in-1 drivers. But if you really want to update it, go to VIA Technologies, Inc (http://www.via.com.tw/en/index/index.jsp) and look for the latest 4-in-1 drivers.

It's recommended that you don't install the IDE Bus Master Drivers from the CD as the one in WinXP is said to be much better and offers better, more stable performance.

oops!
I already installed the 4in1 drivers from the Abit CD. Should I uninstall and find the XP drivers again or does it matter?
Thanks for your input Cricket!

Hi brentconn,

Honestly, I don't know how that will affect your system. If the system runs stable, just leave it as it is.

If the system is unstable then I guess you should uninstall the 4-in-1 drivers...or update the drivers to the latest version from VIATech.com that are written with WinXP in mind.

I downloaded the latest drivers from VIATech.com. They were just updated last week. Thanks for the info.

Cricket,
you were right about VIA chipsets support on XP.

Usually XP ignores them anyway, unless you force the issue.
It's best not to install them,if an update is needed,Windows update would be the place to check.
The busmastering drive is indeed the one to avoid, since Win95b,Microsoft has had a better busmastering drive and installing the Via driver can cause harm to your system(data corruption)

know this thread is a little old, but...
k...i have win 2k pro installed on my system, should i have installed the via 4-in-1 drivers? what is their main purpose? i installed the 4-in-1 and the system has run purdy stable except for one hangup...also, i have yet to install the Service Pack 3 in the system.

I really don't know but XP is based on the same kernel as 2000. I don't know what the "hangup" on your ps is but you can always uninstall the drivers.

2000 does need the 4in1 drivers, excluding the busmastering drive.
Check here for what drivers to install.
