Radeon 9700

I just had this card delivered. I plan to start the build in the morning. The instructions for the card state that I must plug the power connector into the power lead for the C: drive.
I would think that any other connector would be better than the the HDD lead.
What do you think?

Actually, the general consensus when building computers is that the HDD power lead is the only one you should not put a second device on. I believe the Radeon 9700 takes one of the connectors that goes into a floppy disk. It might come with an adapter, but don't split the HDD lead. Anything else is fine.

Normally I would agree! But. i have the 9700 in my hands and the connector is NOT for a floppy drive. The connectors are designed to be placed in line on any other device power cable.

Here is what the directions say:
1. Remove the power cable from the hard drive.
2. Connect A of the power extension cable to the graphics card power connector as shown.
3.Connect B to the power supply connector
4. connect C to the Hard Drive power connector.
5.After locating the AGP slot, and if necessary, removing the metal cover
etc etc etc

As you can see it tell me to put the card on the HDD power lead.

Put it on the CD drive lead then - or an open lead.

GLC: I did. I was just wondering why they would specifiy the HDD lead. I would have thought they would have picked any lead but that one.
Can you think of any reason they would choose that lead?

I am aghast at some of these component manuals: Take you $500 cpu chip and throw into ZIF socket with small force....

ROFL. I follow you now! I know what you mean about some of the manuals and their translation. I guess that's what I'll have to put it down to. It just seemed too "off the wall" to not comment on. I'm sure others will ask the same question as this Video card gets better known.

I would imagine that they specify the hard drive lead because in most case layouts, the hard drive would be the lead closest to the video card. Personally, I HAVE placed other devices on the same lead without incident... including fans.

That's an interesting point. I was thinking they did it because the Hard drive might be more recognizable to the average person who wants to install his own card!
