I recently installed a modem in XP and had some problems with. I then took out the modem card and when I rebooted, the PC said new hardware detected! I went to device manager and and sure enough, there was my modem listed in the device manager. I uninstalled the driver and rebooted and still it said new hardware detected! I then looked at the driver detals in device manager of that modem and it listed two drivers for the same device. No matter what I do, I cannot uninstall the modem from the device manager. How can this be if the card is out of the PC???????

Hi Brent
Did you look in Add/Remove to see if any modem software was listed to uninstall from there? Some modems also add their own Control Panel applet to uninstall from: check to see if there's one in there.
You can also try removing the modem(s) from Safe Mode [press F8 during startup]
Post back if none of this helps

I actually deleted the drivers assigne to the modem and restarted. One was regenerated in the system file and that took care of it. I bought a new modem today at CompUSA and it is working like a charm.
