I've a "Surfnet" ext data/fax/voice (V90,V92) modem which is working but the driver CD is damaged. It's an intel chipset modem. Can I use another driver for it and if so, how do I go about doing it ?
I tried searching driverguide site and others but nothing shows up. Help appreciated.

Have you tried going to the manufacturer's website? They should have downloadeable drivers.

If not, you could try using the generic drivers that come with your OS. What OS are you running?

The link is for an ISP in Finland. The modem is just labelled "surfnet". No relation, I'm sure.
I'm using win98. Is there a way to query the chipset and then search and use generic drivers for it ? I remember something about FCCID but don't know how to go about it.

First of all are you sure that it is an Intel chipset and not Motorola.
If it is in fact Motorola then try here.....

Yep, very sure it's an Intel chipset.

Okay, I gave too brief an overview of my problem. Maybe if I detailed a bit my problem, there may be a way out.

This modem was installed on a PC and working well. Unfortunately, the mainboard went south and I had it changed. After connecting back everything and going through redetecting the hardware etc, the "wave modem for voice modem" driver cannot be found.
In fact, the modem is working for internet but voice is missing.
I did not uninstall any drivers during the MB change so is there a chance that this particular missing driver is lurking somewhere in Windows ?
I tried pointing to the C:\Windows\system folder but it's not there.

It's not a big problem, just irritating as everytime I boot up or restart, windows detected new hardware and ask for this driver.

If it is coming up every time during startup, have you seen what is installed in safe mode, something hanging?

Okay, will check on that. But it's not a malfunction issue. Just that I need the driver to get all the modem features working. Once I can do that, everything will be fine, I think.

Try pointing it to c:\windows

Hmm...didn't thought of that. Will certainly give it a try tonight.
Thanks

Nope, didn't work. Now, it doesn't prompt for the driver during start-up but there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the "wave device for voice modem".

It's not in c:\windows...the actual driver for it will be buried in c:\windows\inf or c:\windows\inf\other
If those folders are hidden when you browse for it, just type it in manually. It could even be in c:\windows\inf\other\modem or c:\windows\inf\other\intel\modem...get the idea?
Use Explorer to view all, including system and hidden files, then you'll have a good idea what you need to type in the path to find it.

Thanks Jim,

Tried what you suggest but still couldn't locate it.
Maybe it wasn't installed at all in the first place on the old mobo since I never notice it or used it.

I think I can live with it. If someone knows about or have the modem driver "surfnet external modem V.92", I'll be glad if you can let me know.

Thanks for helping.
