I'm having some problems with my USR performance pro modem, when I try to connect to my ISP I get a error 737 "loopback detected", the things i've done so far is reinstall the modem and drivers, re-setup my dial up account, spent most of the morning on the phone with my ISP tech and haven't solved the problem. The modem has worked great since I bought it 2 months ago, until today. all ideas accepted OS is W2K. tia

I checked around the net for error messages on modems, and found this website:
http://www.modemhelp.net/dunerror/error_737.shtml

it says to do the following:

1. Check all of the dialer and network settings. Try removing any init strings from the modem.

2. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the modem.

3. Add E0 to any init string the computer may have been using or just use ATE0. This turns echo off. Basically the computer is echoing commands back to itself and thinks that it is trying to negotiate PPP with itself, so this could fix it.

Hope that makes any sense!

Also, now that I think about it, maybe contact your phone company, if nothing else turns up.... I know next to nothing about the telephony aspect of telephones and dial-up, I just know modems and computers... but if I didn't know any better, I might wonder if it's a hardware problem with the phone line itself of some kind; like some weird change between you and the phone company or one of the switchers or whatnot... Again, this is me expressing a muse of a suggestion, but maybe something to look into... other people with more knowledge provide feedback/corrections to this? (hey, I myself am interested)

Thanks ChromWolf, I checked out that page you listed before I posted this, This modem comes with a "control center" program where you can adjust different aspects of the modem, and although it will show a Init. string the only way to edit it is to adjust the settings. When in windows and I view the modem properties there are no extra settings (Init. string). The phone line works because I'm using my laptop to access the internet.

Go to the Dial-Up Networking connection and select the ‘Server Tab’, press the ‘TCP\IP Setting’ button. Check ‘Use default gateway on remote server’, if already checked uncheck it, and try the dial-up again.

Thanks Rick Hall, that didn't help, here's what I have now I got the modem to connect but only at 14Kbps that was this morning, this afternoon it just makes a high pitched whine when trying to connect. I borrowed an external modem and I don't have any problems connecting at 45 to 48Kbps.
