I need a good cable modem.D-link$70,Linksys$81,Toshiba $94,or Motorola $85.Not much difference in price.I'd like to get the best one.Any others?Don't know the first thing about them, what to look for. They list speeds but there all way above the 768kbs speed of the internet service.Suggestions please.

your speed can vary a lot on cable... I have dsl so i don't know exactly how much. I am just guessing that could be why they vary some.

Edit: I mean some companies just might want to get people to get interested in theirs just be seeing a "faster" speed.

I think you will find that they are all the same, no differance in connection speed at all
the speed depends on what service package you pay for.

My cable company has three different speeds available,.256,768,and another over 1000 which is way too expensive, but the slowest speed of the cable modems is 10mbs on uploads. That's what they say anyway.I don't think the cable speed will aproach that.Sounds like anyone of them is adequate.

Just make sure that it has ethernet as opposed to USB.

as long as they are docsis or cable labs certified it shouldnt matter much.....what brands does your cable co offer.....

I didn't ask what kind they have but they want 120bucks or five dollars a month to rent it.I could save 50 dollars by buying one.

I have been using AT@T for about 5 months now. Still in there low price deal for another month, so Im still using there modem. It is a RCA, and they have had to replace 2 of them (on for power and other for slow access).

Myself and three of my friends have been using Motorola modems for about a year now and have not had any problems. By the way all of are using USB connection.

Jimbob running USB is OK, but most people here have more than one PC and when the get cable want to start networking them. Last time I checked they don't sell routers in the US that use USB.

my toshiba works great.
I think best buy had a deal, netgear (Cl certified) for $99
Od or Om had it too, but with a $40 rebate
that's a GOOD deal!

At $5 a month, you would have to rent the modem for 2 years to spend $120. And who knows what can happen in 2 years time, you might decide you don't even like cable.

BTW, I'm renting mine, it's a Motorola SURFboard 4100, and it has been great so far.

In my area AT&T dropped their modem discount, so it doesn't matter whether you own theirs or not. The company I use has a $10 per month charge for their modem use. I bought my Motorola for $100.00. The new modems come docsis1.1 and upgradable.

First I had a Cisco cable modem with a built in 4 port hub (this was 3 or 4 years ago), but it ended up dying last year. Luckily we were renting it. Now I've got a Toshiba. Works great and I get speeds up to 4 mbps.
