cable router

if i got a linksys 5 port switch/ i wanted a dsl/cable router / do i need a cable modem or the router act as a cable modem thanks

The cable modem/dsl is what provides you with the internet access. The router is what you would buy to protect your from those trying to get to your data. Determine what you are going to get first: Cable Modem or DSL. Once you know that then you can go ahead and get the router. But if I remember correctly LinkSys makes their routers now so they are compatable with both.

Linksys, SMC, and most others are compatible with both cable and DSL.

You need a "modem" and a router. The router is available with switch ports so you don't also need a switch.
