Hi,

I have recently subscribed to Bellsouth DSL. On my laptop I get speeds of about 1.2mb download. My problem is with my desktop. I took the ethernet cable from my laptop and connected it to my desktop and on my desktop the speed drops about 2/3 to about 400kbs. A Bellsouth tech looked at my system. He tried a different modem, a different cabe, and also changed the ethernet card, along with looking at the startup and config files. with no change to the speed. He believes there is a bottleneck somewhere, but was unable to identify it. I am running Windows XP Home Ed. I have an intel P-3 500Mhz chip with 512 MB RAM. I have an Abit BE6 motherboard. It has a soundblaster live sound card. It has a 32MB generic NVidia Riva TNT2 model 64 video card. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Rob

What OS is on the laptop? What are you using for authentication - the builtin XP PPPoE client, Bellsouth's crappy software, or RASPPPoE?

On my laptop I am running ME. I don't know what I am using for authentication on my desktop with XP. How do I check it? Which one do you recommend and where can I get it? Thank you.

I am using a Westell WireSpeed modem from Bellsouth. When I called Bellsouth they told me this modem is like a router and is a "nat connection" "router connection". I don't know if this is any help.

Did you install any Bellsouth software on either system? How did you set up your connection on both machines? Do you have to log in or is the connection "always on"?

I installed the bellsouth CD software that came with the package and modem. I don't have to log in, the connection is "always on".
