In your opinion, Which email program has the least security issues, If any at all?
This would be for the windows platform.
Im talking for home use.
Best free and best pay program?

Just looking for alternatives.

Eudora Lite and Pegasus come to mind. Pegasus, I believe has more bells & whistles.

With Eudora Lite and Pegasus, is it a pain to back-up the address book and message folders in the case of a reformat? I've never been able to do this in OE express without 3rd party software.

With Eudora Lite, you just copy a file from your c:\ to a floppy. Paste it back when you're ready. The file is NNDBASE.txt

With Pegasus you just copy the whole \pmail folder somewhere and copy it back, you don't even have to reinstall the program, it runs standalone. The only problem is if you copy it back to a different drive letter, then you have to reinstall. I've moved my Pegasus to 4 different machines now and across different operating systems.

Eudora light 5.1: Nagware unless you register. Does registering mark you as a target for spamm with Eudora? Has anyone registered Eudora light and has this happened?

I have ver. 3.0 and it gives you a choice to never register. I tried the newer versions but they do have some ads.

I still use old Eudora Light 3.0 (free). Very basic and simple with no ad banners like the newer version. It does everything I need it to do. No reason to change to anything else. I use Pegasus at the office and don't much care for it.

With my POP email account(softhome.net) You need to Authenticate when sending e-mail. Eudora 3 and foxmail 2.1 does not have this option that I can find so they're out.

Pegasus is not the prettiest but it has options up the yen-yang and it seems to be the most secure.

Eudora 5.1 does NOT have spyware, it has adware, admittedly from one of the worst offenders though.
Eudora Light is still the best email antivirus client around (try getting a text based program to run any other sort of software!)
Are you absolutely positive it won't authenticate???!!!
Pegasus is the best for LAN/WAN (and internet) email, although it can be daunting for the new user.
Foxmail is for id10ts who like to choke their bandwidth with stationary and sigs in fonts nobody uses as well as advertising spam included with each email.
I've used Eudora for at least 7 years (usually what's now called the Light version) and it works perfectly for just about everyone's needs.

Reboot, do you use 5.1? Is it registered? Im just wondering that If I register my copy of Eudora(light mode) will a storm of spam follow?

I've had no problems registering either the Light or 5.1 and no noticable increase in spam.
The ads are fairly unobtrusive in 5.1 if you have a decent resolution (1024x768 min)
The whole key to preventing it from allowing an infection is to go to Tools, Options, Viewing Mail, and take the tick mark OUT of "Use MS Viewer".
What they call "MS Viewer" is the ability to run full HTML and VBS from within Eudora. Take the tick mark out, and you won't get anything running, it will all appear as attachments, except the odd bit, which may generate an error message, because it's an active link to a web page.
Believe me, it's about as secure as an email client can get. Add ZoneAlarm's email checking function (or at least your anti-virus programs active email scanner) and you won't get anything you don't want.
Easy to set up address book, signatures, stationary, and unlimited filtering options too...all for the price of putting up with a little ad in the corner.
If you don't really mind the popup reminder once a month or so, don't even bother to register it!

Just wondering if he knew what Cydoor was all about, especially if Eudora 5.1 comes with an older version of it. Even if it does come with a newer version, it's still borderline spyware to me.

From the help file:

Check for new POP3 mail every x secs This option controls whether or not Pegasus Mail should poll your POP3 host for new mail automatically, and if so, how often. Enter here a number of seconds between poll cycles (Pegasus Mail is accurate to the nearest three seconds), If you check the Idle control next to this, then Pegasus Mail will wait until it has been idle (no keystrokes or mouse presses) for this length of time before it will automatically check for new mail. If the Idle control is unchecked, then checks will occur at regular intervals, regardless of activity. A value of zero means that Pegasus Mail should never poll the POP3 host automatically – you will have to initiate the check yourself by choosing "check host for new mail" from the File menu.

I must admit, after researching the ads in Eudora 5.1, I'm inclined to think that Pegasus is better. Not a better email client, but a "safer" program for the slightly paranoid. :D
Eudora Light may be all anyone really needs, but for the plethora of features, Pegasus wins out over Eudora 5.1

i use lycos email,i dont know how secure it is but haven't had any real problems,and when i change computers all my addresses etc are still there,i think they are retained in their server of something.anyone know anything about that service? is it reasonably secure?
