Basic network, let see if I have this right.
I can hook two XP machines up, one machine has 2 nics, one connected to my cable modem. The other nic hooked into the 2nd computers nic. Use a crossover cable and you can share internet and files?
Is this correct?

Yes, but the one with the 2 nics should run a firewall.

Or you can buy a Linksys Router which will connect to the cable modem, then you can connect the 2 nodes (PC's) to the router. All straight cables; not crossover.

I take it you don't shop at CompUSA. They have the nerve to ask anywhere from 15bucks and up.

If I were in your shoes, I would go to Radio Shack, buy a reel of cable, a gripper, and connectors and make your own.

Price will vary depending upon length of cable. For home user I don't see making your own. You will have cost of cable, connectors, and crimping tool to use one time. Then without a cable tester, where do you start testing if you have problems.

Don't spend too much on the crossover cable. As soon as you want to add a third computer you will need to go with the router. You use straight cables with a router, so the crossover cable will be surplus.
