I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask this question, but here goes. Is there any way for networked computers to "chat" over the network, but not online. They're all running Windows XP Home edition.

I dont know what you mean by "chat"; for those infrequent messages etc you could use the 'msg' command from the CLI. or 'winchat'
If it is to be more featured chats, you could try one of the following: http://tucows-search.sympatico.ca/lanmessengers95.html
I would assume the "net send" command still works in XP.
Open a command prompt, type: net send (machine name) (message) - without the ( ).

You can also use Netmeeting (free with Windows) to chat over a home network. I've done it several times while just experimenting- Assuming Netmeeting is still supplied with XP.
