Word/Text file > deleting extra carriage returns

I need to download a file from
http://www.ustreas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/sdn/index.html
and be able to do a cross check with a database in MS Access. The US Dept of the Treasury in it's infinite wisdom has included 'hard returns' into the text file inside of a 'record'.

If I try to import the file (Access Excel etc) of course the 'returns' make the next line a new record, which it is not! I'd do it manually even though it is 247 pages long, but I will need to do it repeatedly (every time the list is updated) and I am not going there. There are many different download options, all result in the same file!

As a fix I tried to 'copy' the hard return into the search and replace function in Word, but I can not get it to 'take' on the paste. Anyone have a hint on how to do this? or another solution? I have used a tool from www.beside.com to work with files with this issue BUT the data elements were fixed lengths, these sure aren't.

FYI, this is the list of people, groups, companies that Americans are not supposed to have any business dealings with. It is intersting to look at ONCE, unfortunateley I will be looking at it many times

This is using Word 97:

Try this - highlight the entire document (this may not be necessary - try it both ways) - then open Tools, Options, View - in "nonprinting characters" check off "paragraph marks". Then in Edit, Replace, click Special and choose "paragraph marks" - and leave the replace with blank or put a space in, whatever you want.

I noticed that a hard return does put a paragraph mark in when I use it, having this view option enabled.

If you mean that you want to get rid of the carriage return chars, then I found a way to do it:
Download an app called EditPlus, go to Tools > Preferences > Files > and select UNIX fromat, then create a new text file, copy your file contents, and save it.

Thank you both for your help, GLC's worked for me best mainly because I did not have the rights to conduct the download and install.

Now to figure out a way to conduct a cross check of this list automatically instead of manually, the AKA's are going to kill me.
