I ran into a setup problem recently on a Linksys router on a T1 line that turned out to be that the routers address had to be manually configured due to a conflict with the T1 switches address. BUt with RR this should not be your problem.
INstead hook everything up and then go Start>Run> Type in "Winipcfg" Hit Enter, Release All, Renew ALL. THen check to see that your settings are correct.
Yeah - you have to clone the MAC of the NIC into the router.

In the Router manual you will find the router's IP address. Open IE and then hit Stop.
Type in the router's address.
Go into the setup and make sure that DCHP is enabled.
Go to the MAC address section and put a check in the Clone MAC address or hit the Clone button.
You should have it.
Make sure that you have DCHP enabled on the NIC Card First and that TCP/IP is loaded for the NIC.
You also may want to do a rest on the router prior to doing the above so that it goes back to the defaults.
Although the router manual can look imposing with all the pages and terminology. They are pretty much plug and go, with the exception of Cloning the MAC. Just ignore all the manual setting directions for entering addresses, and follow the manual step by step. Most of the setup will be look at the Routers IE page and go to the next step. I would say that 98% of the pages in the manual do not apply to hooking a router to cable. So don't let it imtimadate you. And remember if you enter any numbers for the NIC or Router you are doing the setup wrong. Manual addressing is only used when you have a problem with the address conflicting with another device (Not the Modem). In the case I had it was because of a switch that was in the complex that was conflicting.

I follow all that so far.
clone page wants me to typing the wane mac address, so I type in the ip address of the nic adapter , right
well there is not 12 digets in that number.
I must be confused as to just what to type in that field
so far nothing works that I have tried
Here is how you find the MAC address of your NIC in XP.
Open a command prompt
Type IPCONFIG /ALL
The MAC will be the "physical address" of your network adapter, it's expressed as 6 sets of 2-digit alphanumeric characters. You have to enter this into the MAC Clone section of the Linksys, it's under Advanced.
You do not have to enter ANYTHING else into the router for it to work with RR - so best thing to do is do a hard reset to factory defaults, set the NIC TCP/IP to get IP addresses automatically, log into the router at 192.168.1.1, use blank username, use admin for password, clone the MAC, hit Apply and you should be on line. You may have to power cycle the modem and router, and reboot the computer, but no other settings are needed.

ok. I followed the instructions to a t, and it still will not workI will get the cabel led on, link on the router, but the pc led is not on, just blinks a littel on the modemI did do the clone of the mac address for the nic card. also did the hard reset first, reboot everything, and the same thing happens, but without tuching anything, just putting the end from the wane port of the router into the nic on pc it goes right into normal aperation.
Ido get a network cable error sometimes ever sence the cable was installed
I am lost on this now

Bailey, I am on Roadrunner, and it doesn't care what NIC card that I use. That is not to say that yours doesn't require it. If your PC light doesn't come on your modem, it sounds like your router may have some problems. It really now just comes down to a process of elimination. First thing that I would do is to try it without the router and see if cable works. If it does, then try replacing the cable from your router to the modem and from the PC to the router. If it works then, then the problem lies in your router.
Make sure you are using a straight Cat5 cable from a router switch port to the NIC.........you might be using a crossover cable or you might be trying to use the uplink port. Try a different/new cable and/or a different switch port.

ok, thanks. I will try that ans let you know

ok, I did everything as suggested, same results on all
the pc light only blinks a few times, should be on solid.
cabel light is on solid on the modem.
pc says connected to network.
but does not seam to be communicateing with modem.
whthout changing anything, or even power down on anything, just change to one cable from modem to nic, it auto detects all and connects to internet ok.
I am thinking that the nic and the router is useing the same ip address, the dchp client list only shows the router, nothing else.
keep trying to get this to work.
With the PC connected to the router, reboot the PC then open a command prompt and type IPCONFIG /ALL , then copy and paste to here.

and this is how it looks without the router connected
Everything looks right - except for the 5 minute DHCP lease the router is giving you (I think it's supposed to be a week if everything is right) - why don't you call Linksys support? It's toll-free and very good.
A thought - you could try setting the router to those DNS addresses manually instead of using the default zeros. Just make sure you keep the main IP set to obtain automatically.

well I tried everything, still won't work.
I even put a new nic in it and it won't even work with that at all.
Put the original nic back in to preserve MAC addressing and call Linksys.

All maaaaaan,
I'm having that exact same problem with my router(Netgear RT 314). I have RR also as my ISP and my router will not allow me to hook up to the Intnt. I have done a whole lot of troubleshooting as well. All I want is for one of you network geniuses to rescue me please. I have all the CAT5 cabling needed and installed into the devices, but still nothing. Is there anybody who can talk me through the main steps which I need to take?
Sys: Pentium 3, 512 MB, 80GBHDD, Realtek NIC, Surf Board 3100 Cable modem, Netgear RT 314
I need to know what IP addresses need to be assigned to what device or network...etc. Like I said before this is the same problem as the other guy was having. I'm pretty sure that the modem isn't defective though. I really thought a simple home network would be alot easier than this wheeeew! Just 2 PC's, a router, and a cable modem and it's like trying to network for Corporate America or something! Why isn't my router accessing the Internet through the cable modem????????

what the problem ended up being is the cable modem they brought out was bad, they came back out with a new modem and all has been working great ever sence.
I have 6 systems on the network right now and all is sweet

HEEEEEYYYYY!
It works now that I've installed the two protocols that were missing....."IPX/SPX, AND NETBEUI". Yep these two were the ones I needed for the router to establish the IP address. Now when I ipconfig, I only see the router's information only. The internal network and the adapter's information is all zeroed out. This must mean that I can't be seen on the Internet by hackers at all!! Now that's great, Something so simple which can cause a major headache. Now I have my computer networked with my son's with the use of the router. Everything is all good now. The connection is strong on both systems also. Thankz for your help everyone! I think I got this Networking stuff down a little now fo sho'.
