new message/same old problem

hello all me again
well i tried the solutions given here on my friends pc
(problem - i uninstalled his com port and pc would not get past popup box saying it was searching for new hardware)
(solutions- tried booting in safe and doing msconfig -this will not work in safe mode
(tried to run scanreg/restore in dos to get to old reg. setting((-pc said bad command or filename)
(d/l regcleaner and regmaid but did not feel safe using them and did not want to do anymore harm)
(looked in device manager and found two versions of nec disk controller and two versions of harddisk controlloers running but nothing marked with yellow flags)
(now pc does not show d: drive in windows explorer but shows it under device manager)
(can boot up in safe mode with no problem and do whatever )
(also during safe boot i chose -f1- for the setup option and found com port diabled there)
(also tried their windows 95 startup disk but nothing happened after pc switched to a: drive ---Question? was i supposed to type in instructions ,?if so what would the command be?)

(also can i use my windows 98 system restore disk to fix his pc?)
(also can i use a boot disk and what is the proper way to use it?)
(windows 95 boot disk that is!!!!)

Hi scifiguy1,

Reading back over your posts, I think the time has come to backup the important data, format the HD, and do a clean install of Windows.

It will save you, and your friend, a lot of time and grief.

In my experience, IE has always been so tightly integrated with Windows, any attempt to uninstall it usually ends up with system problems.
