I would like to begin using outlook for my email, but I've always heard that it is a security problem, is this true?

Also, what is the difference between the express version and the other versions?

Yes, it is true. Outlook Express which is very loosely related to Outlook is the worst security wise. Outlook is not far behind it. Behind being in a corporate environment where you have to run Outlook for it's group management piece, I would stay well clear of both.

All right. Are there any other programs I could use?

Pegasus, Eudora, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera, The Bat!, and I'm sure there are others.

The main difference between Outlook and Outlook Express is that Outlook has more functionality. It's a suite of time/date management software that can be used in a networked environment allowing a lot of shared access between users. ugh... slipping into trendy cheesy talk... Outlook is a more robust Outlook Express. ::beams:: They both have security issues, though.

I'm not sure how I would survive without Outlook. I find it to be a very useful program. I do all my emailing, scheduling, multitasking, journaling (for ranking and review), and recording contact info. in one easy to use program. At the end of the day, I download everything to my Toshiba e740 (encrypted flash chip), and take it home for uploading. I'm anything but an expert on security, but I've not come across any problems.

GLC, are any of those programs free that you know of?

Netscape, Opera and Mozilla are all browsers that come with mail programs. They are all free to download. Eudora is free but is adware. Pegasus is free. Not sure about the other one mentioned.

The Bat! is commercial, you can download a 30 day trial. I personally use Pegasus, I feel it's the most secure and powerful E-mail program out there, but it's quirky and has a steep learning curve.
