My son was running a standard serial mouse on his MSI mobo(socket 7, K6-III), now he's trying a PS2 mouse with serial adapter and we can't seem to get it to work. This board does not have a PS2 mouse port, only serial. The message we get on startup is: "windows did not detect a mouse.....to safely install a PS2 mouse turn off the computer".
Some PS/2 mice do not work with some adapters. I see this all the time.
Check the mobo carefully - it *should* have a PS/2 mouse header on it - then all you need is a MSI slot plate adapter.
Yeah Ron, just check the PS/2 connector on the mobo, and see how the pins line up (there are at least two types that I know of). I'm sure a local shop there would give ya a PS/2 cable and port for about 2 or 3 bucks tops.
I had the same thing with my last Soyo AT mobo. Never got the serial ports to work with a mouse, and never found out why.

OK,
I see what you're talking about. In the MSI manual it's identified as "JMS1" 5-pin connector for PS2 mouse. So it looks like I just need to buy the PS2 cable and port.
Thanks glc and X.
