Linux Mandrake Partition...

Hello everybody,
I want to put Linux Mandrake on my HD. I have an Active partition for Windows 98SE FAT32 with 100% usage. I Want to install Linux Mandrake onto another partition. Will the installation ask me to resize my partition?

and also, when the boot manager LILO comes up, in anyway I want to delete Linux. Can I just format and delete the partition, and the boot manager won't show up anymore? I understand that I may be able to just edit the boot file..

Hi,

Mandy will ID all your partitions during the install. It will ask you what partition(s) you want to install it on. And it will only install on the ones you select. You will can then partition that partition out for Mandy. Your winC drive will be ID'ed as hda1. After you set up your Linux partitions, they will disappear to Windows. So, to remove them, you will need to run fdisk to remove the linux partitions and then redo them as fat32.

I noticed that fdisk sometimes fails to delete Linux partitions, in this case you need a tool called DelPart, just do a google search and you'll find it.

The later versions of Mandrake I've encountered, had a tutorial on Disk 1 that could be run from the Windows environment, that should prove informative. As always back up any files you can't afford to lose, before starting any disk partitioning, resizing, etc. Personally in uninstalling, Ive used the Linux version of FDISK to delete linux partitions, as I've never had a win 9x version of fdisk know what to do with a linux partition. You have to redo the master boot record to eliminate lilo, (If it was installed to the M.B.R.)

I would also suggest if you are able to get partion magic to set up partions ahead of time, this is a very user friendly program and can re-size and set up all of your partions ahead of time and create your swap partion for you.

The version of fdisk that comes with Windoze does not recognize Linux partitions and filesystems. The version the comes with Linux does recognize Windoze partions and filesystems. If you ever need to remove Linux partitions and re-allocate them to a Windoze filesystem, use the linux version of fdisk -- or its derivatives such as cfdisk.

If you have another partition available for use with Linux, the Mandrake installer will allow you to select and manipulate that current partition and to also leave the active Windoze partition alone. But you do need to be careful, look at what is on the screen, read what the installer is telling you. In manipulating the other partition, you can divide it up so that you have a swap partition and as many other Linux partitions as you feel tyou need.

When you start the Mandrake installer, in one of the firat few steps it will ask you if you want to do the "Recommended" or "Expert" install mode. I strongly suggest using the "Expert" mode as it will give you more control over your installation while still giving you good defaults, as you desire.
