Is there another updating site like Cnet's Catchup? They have shut down that service.

It would analyse your software and hardware, and tell you about any updates you might need.

Well, if you run windows, the windows updater will keep your windows install and drivers up to date.

Yeah, that takes care of windows, Catchup looked at all your software and hardware too.

Well, mattg2k4 has a good point, besides I used cnet catchup a long time ago and all it did for me was to screw my computer up.

It only screwed your computer up if you blindly went and got everything it found.

I only tried to use it once. It's value was lost in it's user-unfriendliness

Granted when I did try to use cnet catchup I didn't know as much about PC computers as I do now (Thanks to PCMech), but still the whole point of the service is to take care of your system without needing to know much about computers. I think Cnet's thoughts were in the right place, but with all the combinations of hardware/software that is out in the market it became to much. Besides there are some good utility programs out there, such as Norton System Works that basically can do almost the same thing as the service. But I still will be leary of letting even that do it blindly.

There is good and evil sides to those services but honestly my ol' puter(s) work best with very few update services like that. I remember back when MaCrappee had that service packaged with they're 'clinic'. geezz the only service they performed was screwing up my registry and giving me updates my puters didn't need.Thanks to this site I am wiser today & I suggest you check your hardware etc's sites periodically get what you need not what Cnet or whoever thinks you need on a mass scale.

That is good advise to a person who knows little about computers, but the service was handy for those of us that could determine what we could use or what is junk. It saved time by letting me know what was available without me having to do a bunch of searching. I've kept my computer pretty well up to date with it and will miss it.
But, several of you are right, you don't just go download everything, because that is a good way to screw up your computer.
