Win XP installation cant find my HDD

Having brought a new harddrive recently i have been trying to install windows XP on it (never used this before, but thought id give it a go), however, when i tell it i want to install it (on a page where it says new install, fix previ install, or quit) it then tells me it cant find my hard drive.
Lookingthrough DOS etc thensystem says the hardrive IS there - so why wont winxp recognise it?
I have run a diagnostic test on the HDD (a IBM deskstar) and it says its fine, and my version of win XP is also fine.....
Any ideas???????????

r u installing by booting to the cd rom? or trying to install from windows itself?

If you are trying to upgrade from windows 95 it wont work. Or if you are trying to upgrade from the home version to pro, it will not work either. Not sure if this fits here since you don't mention what OS you are using now.

This is a new HDD then you need to create your partition/partitions then format and install the OS. Those options should have been made available to you after you choose to install a new install. Also XP will only support FAT32 partition up to 32Gb's.

Done what you said - partoioned my 60G hard drive into two - so there are no partions over 32GB's - and still get exactly the same. And it was a Fat 32 partion too..

Any other ideas?

How is the HDD configured? Master, slave or cable select and which IDE channel is it on? What did you use to create and format the HDD fdisk or the XP setup? Have you tried formatting it with NTFS?
If you created the partitions and formatted the drive with the XP setup I find it odd that the setup doesn’t see the HDD or partitions.

What motherboard and BIOS version do you have?

Go into the BIOS and see what size is reported for the Hard Drive.

Is it reported as 60Gb or less than 60Gb?

Hard drive was reported as being 61.5 GB - which is the exact size it is. Just to keep you updated on this, i managed to plug my hard drive into panother computer and then installed XP and it installed no probs. Unfortunatly i havnt yet had the chance to put my HD in my computer to see if it works.
I'll let you know if its succesful tomorrow......
