Problem with new build

I am building a pc for my brother in law, everything went ok until I tried installing the gpu drivers.

here are the system specs:

ECS K7S5A mobo (yeah, I know...)
AMD AthlonXP 1700+
Gainward GeForce 4 ti 4200 64mb
SB Live 5.1
60gb Maxtor HDD
256mb RAM
CD-RW

the problem i am having is after i install the Nvidia drivers. When i reboot the system it posts then the WinXP startup screen appears, then after a couple seconds it goes black. this is really pissing me off. I have tried flashing the mobo, it already has the latest bios. I have tried 4 different versions of the NVidia drivers, Flash the GPU bios, installed the latest SiS AGP drivers, checked the monitor, and even tried re-installing windows. Is there something I am missing??? I've never had this much trouble with a pc before...

Any help would be GREATLY apreciated

Hi Devilface,

Just out of curiosity, what type of RAM are you using: the PC133/100 type or the DDR ones? I have heard that that that board may have problems using the latter type of memory. I have the same mb that I built for my wife and it is running with PC100 sticks w/out any problems.

Make sure your video card is seated properly by reseating it. If that doesn't work, Go into your bios and make sure your video card isn't running to fast. Check the ratio setting (if you have that capability and run the FSB ratio at 4:2:1 or 5:2:1. If that is ok then Uninstall the drivers and use the standard drivers that come with XP if they are in there.

If you have one, remove the DDR sticks and try a PC100 stick and see what happens.

Don't know it will solve the problem, but it may.

no i don't have any, i might be able to pull one out of my dad's pc but i'll have to wait... I just restarted and reseated the card, no luck, i will try the bios settings next

no luck with the bios, it doesn't include those settings...
The pc does work in safe mode, if that says anything to you. It shows the driver installed with no problems in the device manager. I don't see any conflicts, it's really buggin' me. I should have made him buy an ASUS!

this sounds like a device conflicit. Do this. Uninstall the drivers and reboot. If it reboots, then you knowq it is the driver or some IRQ position.

yeah, sorry, i guess i need to be more comlete with my prob... already tried that, I'm pretty sure it's something like that BUT i can't change anything in safe mode because the nvidia drivers are not active. winxp has a "safe" driver that it uses. which means i can't tweak any settings unless the device is working! damn, you have no idea how much i wan't to throw this whole box across the room right now!

you cannot uninstall nvidia drivers in safe mode? hmmmmmm
do you have an old agp card you could put in?
