I'm moving and instead of incurring a $30 "setup" cost (they get to flip a switch for $30) from my cable company I've decided to switch to the DSL service that SBC/Yahoo is offering. Anybody have any experience with this service? The CSR told me I was in a "prime" location within 7,000 feet of the server. Is that good? Should I expect good download speeds above their 768kps guarantee?

No. Pay the $30.

Are download speeds at the minimum? Downtime on the servers? Why no?

I've signed up for it but won't have service for another week so I can back out of it if I have too.

If you're gonna get DSL from SBC, I'd highly recommend going with the 80 dollar 256k up/static IP plans they have now.

1) Don't have to use the Yahoo software
2) You seem to get more attention when you call with a problem if you pay a little extra for a higher speed and static IPs

They're fairly reliable, it's just that the Yahoo software is AOLish.

The Yahoo software trashed out a customer of mine's Win98SE so bad we had to run the restore disk. If you can get standard PPPoE service that will run with a router, the builtin XP PPPoE client, or RASPPoE, its a decent service. Otherwise, stick with your cable, you have the equipment, configuration, and account already in place. $30 to do paperwork and throw some switches is nominal.

If you are paying for 768k, that's what you get, no more. Most of my SBC DSL customers on the 768/128 plan get about 600 down and 90 up due to the overhead of the software, replacing it with RASPPPoE or a router gets it up to about 720/120. It's no more reliable than cable around here - they both have frequent outages.

Thanks for the replies. I've decided to stick with cable for now and cancelled my order with SBC after looking at feedback at dslreports.com about SBC's service.
