Ntfs?

Hi all,

I know in the past, Linux partitions could not see NTFS partitions. I'm running Mandy 8.1 and I'm wondering if any new distros allow access to NTFS.

Mandrake 9.0 can see the NTFS on your other partition. Maybe someone here can tell you how to mount this with your existing distro.

As far as I have been able to do, and as this guide affirms, NTFS partions can be mounted, but in read-only mode. I have found it useful for accessing my docs and mp3s. If you want to edit the doc, however, you need to save it to your Linux partion. It will not save to your NTFS partition.

I have been meaning to ask a friend if he's gotten full access to an NTFS partition, yet. I'll ask him tomorrowm, and post back if I find anything else out.

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!! YEA!!!!!!!!! Thanks Statica and MrN8. MrN8, I used your link primarily. Question: On your link, Statica, it SERIOUSLY cautions one about writing to the NTFS partition. Is reading and copy&pasting OK? I added an NTFS icon to my desktop to mount it easily. Under permissions, shall I check off 'Read Only' just to be safe?

Copying (from an NTFS file) & Pasting to another is a read operation and will not harm your existing NTFS file system or file. Write support is experimental as it mentions, and it works great for me without issues .. but <b>use at your own peril;)</b>

NTFS write support is iffy and will likely remain so for a long time. It's a very tough nut to crack without specs and when M$ makes subtle changes along the way.

In many cases it may work just fine, then suddenly ... gone. If you have data files that you want to share between WinXP/W2K and a Linux installation, set up a FAT32 partition. Both Linux and Windoze have no problems with FAT32 in read and write mode.
