Hi Barry II,
Which OS? What kind of background programs are installed? Do you have a lot of different programs installed on the computer that do essentially the same things? How long has the OS been installed without a clean re-install? Have you run Scandisk and Defrag? Have you done a full virus scan with updated definitions?
System specs?

Hi Barry II,
Start up Windows Explorer and go to c: \Windows \Temp and delete everything inside.
Start up Internet Explorer and go to Tools> Internet Options> Click on the Delete Cookies and Delete Files buttons.
Run Scandisk and then Defrag. Before you run them, turn off all background applications. Start> Run> type in "msconfig" (without the quote marks) and hit OK. Click on the Startup tab and then uncheck everything except Explorer, Systray and Scanreg. Click Apply and then OK and then reboot the system.
Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Scandisk.
Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Defrag.
Do a scan for viruses with updated definitions as soon as you can.
You may want to think about formatting the hard drive and re-installing Win98SE sometime in the near future. The Windows installation will degrade over time and become more and more unstable. Most of the members here will do a clean install of Windows at least once a year...some more often. Of course, back up all your important files and data first.

It may be set that way for some reason in File Types.
Double-click My Computer.
On the View menu, click Options.
Click the File Types tab.
In the Registered File Types box, scroll down until you find "File Folder"
Left-click on it to highlight it.
Click Edit button.
In the Actions box, left-click "find" to highlight it.
Click Set Default.
Click Close, and then click Close.
