What would cause a DVD reader to reboot a system when attempting to access a CD-ROM from it? I believe the problem started around the time my friend installed an USB HP CD rewritable to go with it. The CDRW could access the CD's but no the DVD. Uninstalling all the CDRW drivers and software and completely taking the CDRW off the system did not help.

The machine is a Compaq Presario 5700T running Windows 98. Any assistance where to look for the problem would be greatly appreciated. -GL

Have you removed the dvd from device manager and reinstalling it.

I did remove and reinstall the DVD in device manager, with no luck.

What channel is it on right now. Primary slave, 2nd master or slave.

Try switching it to a different channel.

You should go to http://www.compaq.com and check out the updates for your 5700t, there's quite a few. Some have to do with DVD.
