Restart, scan, safe mode.

Restart.
Open CP, crash...
Restart, safe mode.
Primary and Secondary IDE controller (dual FIFO), both with yellow !'s and can't be removed.
Look for updated Intel 440BX 82371AB/EB Busmaster drivers...none available.
Restart to Win98 (on other HD).
Browse the Asus disk. No drivers.
No CD-ROM in ME.
Force install of win98 drivers for Primary and Secondary.

your dilemma with Windows Me. I just installed it over Windows 95 last Sunday and only had 1 problem, my Visioneer scanner wouldn't run. I figured out the offending file and fix from Visioneers website and fixed it. I crossed my fingers when I installed ME cuz I am not experienced with changing operating systems. ME wants to assign all it's drivers and ****can yours. I don't really like that. It won't let change drivers for some reason. ME says there driver is best.....hogwash!!!

You're the man reboot,....ME runs well and hasn't locked up,
or done anything wrong since I installed it last Sunday. Iam using 64 megs of RAM and seems to handle it self well.

If anyone can make something work while encountering problems,.......you can!!!! Man, you've got experience!!!

Good luck, God Bless,
Bob J.

What the heck are you doing Jim??? :D I've been doing 2 to 3 clean installs a day and just as many installs over top of Win9x with the full ME version and the biggest problem I've had so far is a minor video driver problem on one of my own computers.

2 of my freinds installed me everything went great, no problems with anything. then, after a while it started rebooting there machine out of the blue, at any time. problem went away with a fresh install of 98. i didnt believe them myself, so i installed me, same thing, after about a week it rebooted! oh well, back to 98. i would like very much to know what the problem is. bios settings maybe?

I've encounter problems doing the upgrade, but all is peachy with clean install.

Figured it out.
The system is set up with master boot HD, secondary master HD, and cd slaved to secondary.
Win 98 on master.
Set up ME on secondary, won't get BIOS calls for IDE controller using IRQ's 14 and 15 because the secondary is on the secondary.
I (temporarily) change the drives and installed ME on primary with CD as slave, all is well.
I guess ME MUST be the primary master HD, or it just won't work right.
Now to find drivers for my Mustek scanner/SCSI card...;)

I had a guy this weekend that wanted to install ME on his system, but keep his 98 just in case he didn't like it. He took his 98 drive and made it a slave and his slave drive a master to install ME. The ME install took files from the 98 install on the slave drive and helped to make a mess.... somthing like you were having there Jim. He disconnected the 98 drive and did the ME install, no problems. He installed the 98 drive again as a slave, no problems. So what I see so far is if you're doing a clean install, make sure it is CLEAN with nothing on other drives, or do the upgrade.

You got it Hal. ME wants to take over the world, and won't install properly if it's on a slave drive, and will royally screw with a win98 install on any other drive.
I had to physically remove the win98 master drive (unplug cables), re-plug cables to other HD as master, set it all up, then reassemble things the way I wanted.
BTW, I'm using xosl as a boot loader, so as long as I can get either drive booting, I can then select which OS I want.

Why not do it the smart way instead of the way you did? Just have it save all the Win98 OS files at setup, and if he doesn't like it, he could remove it from the add/remove panel. Duh.

reboot

No Duh.
I want a dual ME/98 system.
I want 98 as default.
I do NOT want to "upgrade" my 98 to ME!!!
I want a clean install of ME.
I want ME on my secondary drive (slower).

I did 8 fresh installs of Win ME so far and have had no problems at all. I like it http://206.161.202.65/forum/images/icons/icon6.gif

As a fresh install on the primary master, it's smooth as silk. Any other way, and it's headache time.
I do have it all running exactly the way I want it now though, thanks. :D
