Seems I have lost something but I don't really know what it is (what it's for) "GMT.EXE". I know I can't open any office documents. When pc boots and finishes I get a box appears and asks which program do I want to us to open this "GMT.EXE". Does anyone know what I use?
Thanks for the help
Tim

Hello Toolman35,
Try using the Registry Checker in SYSTEM INFORMATION under TOOLS.

You can also download REGCLEAN from Microsoft. Will clean up all of the junk that you don't need in the Registry.

Will look around for more tips.

Hi Toolman, Hi Matt

GMT.EXE is part of a group of programs that do the pop-up ad thing while your browsing. Also called Gator, or GAIN - you can first get these if you ask a site to remember shopping-type information for you (and site-specific passwords, etc.). But the convenience comes at a cost: your privacy. If you use the Gator utilities, then you've had Gmt.exe on your system. Here's a link that explains Gator, Gain, and Gmt.exe: http://www.cexx.org/gator.htm - and here's a sneak preview of what you'll find there:
____
GAIN (GMT.exe, CMESys.exe, GAIN_TRICKLER_*.EXE)
GAIN is short for Gator Advertising Information Network, and is the newest incarnation of the Gator spyware we all know and love
____

You can remove it fully by downloading and running Ad-Aware from lavasoft. http://www.lavasoft.de

If that doesn't do it, you may need an even stronger program called Search and Destroy, but I don't have the link for that handy just yet. If you decide to try it, make backups - and be ready to repair install your IE. It's pretty thorough, I'm told (I'm still learning about this program). I've used Ad-Aware for quite a while now & it seems to do a pretty good job.

If you've also been using file-sharing via KaZaa, I'd recommend not using that anymore. Uninstall it also, and do as thorough a virus scan as you can, for your normal.dot may have been corrupted with a virus. You might want to scan both with your current anti-virus, as well as with an online scanner such as HouseCall (a free service offered by TrendMicro - they figure if you see how well HouseCall works [it does a fine job] you'll take a look at their premium antivirus module: PcCillin). http://www.trendmicro.com

Best of luck
