I'm new to Unix, and servers.

A support tech for our medical office has stated that the bus speed/memory speed "DOES NOT matter" when running Unix.

Our server is for a medical office running "Medical Manager" (in case it matters). It is to be a 2.0GHz Zeon supporting about 48 terminals.

Our choice is between an outside vendor offering a system with PC2100, and his system running a MB with PC1600 (as well as differences in peripheral cards not offered in his system).

My other question is: I've read that a server's power supply isn't considered truely redundant unless it has 3 power supplies, while he's stating that a single power supply offered in his version is fully redundant. I'd tend to disagree, but I've built more home systems.

Anyone have any ideas (I think that he's just trying to sell us a cheaper version with fewer perpherals at the same price-for the obvious profit that he'll make).

I guess what I'm asking is: Isn't computer speed related to bus speed, and isn't this INDEPENDENT of OS or programs?

I am also concerned that PC1600 Motherboards are usually inferior/older products since DDR memory has advanced far beyond the early PC1600 days. Perhaps I'm incorrect on all accounts?

your OS will not affect bus speed. Your OS will benefit from faster RAM as the entire system will be better equipped to take full advantage of the processor. For upgradeability you would want to have a PC2700 system to be up to date for a while IMO.

Thanks.

It didn't seem to make sense that the bus speed wouldn't affect the overall speed.

I'm not sure if he just meant that we're at "overkill" status already, or if he's just trying to profiteer (I believe the latter).
