formatting

Hay all. Im at college to be a network admin and any other time I would have no problem with this but my girlfriends dad who is also a network admin tells me some thing I never heard of befor.

I have a old packard bell pc. Pentium 166, 64MB pc66, 3.2gig.

It has windows 95 B on it and I want to put 98SE into it. But Tim (g/f's dad) says I have to get .. I cant remember what he said but they are drivers & I think it begins with a P and it allows to boot of a cd rom or some think?

If I could get some help with this id be very happy

Actually, Win95B is a good match for that system. Why do you want Win98?

If you have an "Upgrade" version of Win98se, you should be able to start the upgrade from within Win95. If you don't have the upgrade edition, I'd advise that it's more trouble than you really need. Older Packard Bells can have some fairly old (and fairly odd) hardware with very hard to find drivers - some of which don't have Win98 drivers at all (old Cirrus video comes to mind).

[Another "gotcha" - If the cd-drive on that system is attached to a sound card connector, and you don't have an upgrade CD, you might have a heck of a time getting it to work from the bootable floppy to start your Win98 install]

I wonder if he's referring to the fact that bootdisks made in Win95 or Win95 OSR2 didn't have CD-Rom support.

You either added the CD-Rom drivers yourself (great fun) or got a bootdisk with CD-Rom support from www.bootdisk.com.
