My 15" monitor used to be filled with the desktop, but it now has a 1.5" border, top and bottom. My visual desktop is now 6.5cm (length) and approx 26cm wide. Windows is now elongated.
I thought at first it was the monitor, however, on start up the full Windows splash screen displays, likewise the DOS stuff before it!?!?

what type of screen is this? a tft (flat) or a crt (glass, the old kind)
if it's a tft try setting a larger screen resolution
if this does not help it:
we need more info, video card, type of windows, type of screen.

Hi bewbew,
I'm not trying to be funny, but have you tried adjusting the screen size via the front monitor controls?
Check in Display Properties (right-click on Desktop and choose Properties) what resolution, colour depth, and refresh rate is video card and Monitor using.
The resolution should be around 640x480 or 800x600. Under "Adapter" in the Advanced tab, it should be set to Optimal or Adapter Default. Try both.
Check in display properties and make sure the monitor is set to "Plug and Play" monitor.
If that doesn't work, then try downloading a specific monitor driver (.inf file) for your monitor from your manufacturer's website.

thanks for your answers........
well, there are no buttons to fiddle with on my glass monitor.......
the resolution is at 800x600, under 'adapter', it was set to optimal, and so I changed it to Adapter default, and wow, the whole screen filled up, but the computer, or windows then reset it back to 'optimal' so it all shrunk again. Monitor is set to plug and play.....it is a COMPAQ MV540 on Trident Blade 3D/MVP4 (63) driver....

If there are no buttons or knobs on the front, try looking on the back, under the overhang of the monitor, or near the power and video feeds.

If your monitor is set as a "Plug and Play" Monitor, then go into Display Properties>Settings>Advanced>Monitor and click the change tab.
When asked for a driver, get it to show a list of all devices. Then go the the Monitor section and see if a driver for the MV540 is listed.
You could also try booting into Safe Mode and removing the monitor from Device Manager. Exit Safe Mode and when the monitor is redetected, get it to show a list of all devices, and see if the MV540 driver is listed.
In either case, if the monitor is not listed, then go to the Compaq site and see if you can find the driver (.inf file) for the monitor, put it on a floppy disk, and install it as per above.
While you're at Compaq, you might want to check for updated drivers for the Trident.
Have you made any changes to your system before the problem occurred?
What Windows version do you have?

It the entire screen was filled at the Default refresh rate, you should be able to get it to fill at the Optimal refresh rate also: you just need to locate your monitor's controls. It's not unusual to have to reset things, especially if there's been a power out - or if you simply haven't used the monitor in a long time.
(sometimes the controls are there in the front, but hidden by a panel that will open when gently pressed)
Best of Luck
