56K is absolute fastest rated speed under ideal conditions. 48K is excellent in real world. I don't know about down under but here in the states we are capped at less than 56K anyway.

When I had dial-up my phone line quality was such that 26.4 was about maximum. I tried about 4 different ISP's, 2 PC's and three modems and 26.4 was about it. Again 48 is good.

I'd kill to get 48k here - my phone line gives me 40k tops, normal connect is 37.2.

When i was in the states I would get 36 at most. Now I get 54 to 56k connections here.... Kind of odd because when they installed my phone line they did a crappy job... They stripped the wire from both end and just knotted them together with there hands....

I guess as long as it works... ;)

33.6 here 60% of the time.

28.8 30% and 21.6 10%.

The rate you get from your modem! is decided on by your telephone exchange! some exchanges will give you 56K but some will give you less! if you get any where between 33K and 48K then you are ok! it also depends on wot time of day you go online to!!!! at peak time your rate is going to be lower!!! so look at what time you go online!!!!!!

if you want faster go for ISDN or broadband! but they no possibilities of you getting the maximum with them neither.

Telcos don't decide modem speed, "unless" you're on a digital splitter, whereas 2 lines use the same telco pair; then you get 28.8. Or if your line quality is sub-par it will effect speed, in which case the problem should be noticeable on voice calls. I've never seen peak time effect my speeds, although it does effect the transfer rate.

DSL not an option in my area. I get 52k consistently.

I always get 48k, it's not to bad, i will think about getting ADSL or broadband at a later stage.
