CD Jammed... and?

Hi

Friend of mine has a Compaq PC with a slot loading CD Drive (like your car stereo's CD player)

The CD's in, but it won't come out. I haven't seen it yet but I told him to unravel a paper clip and shove it in the little hole that should be underneath the loading area

Then he told me what kind of drive it was.

I'm not sure, do these types of drives have the little holes for getting jammed CDs out?

He hasn't got back to me yet so who knows if it found it or not...

some do some dont try holding eject and rebooting as some time windows thinks you nead the cd and over rides the eject

Hi fatboyjim,

I've never seen one without an eject hole, but that doesn't mean it's not possible. Also, sometimes, especially on store bought computers, the case will cover the hole up. You can open the system and pull it out, or, as I have done in the past (to not break the seal), is to gently open the door and pull out the tray -- just remember not to apply to much energy :D !

Not sure if this will help but you might want to try to find out what company made the drive and contact tech support.
If you have a local electronics shop that sells and repairs car stereo equipment they also might be able to give you some ideas. Not sure but the mechanisms might be similar?

Just a quick note to say thanks for the help

I fixed this ages ago then remembered I hadn't told you all how it went.

In the end I couldn't do anything other than open it up and see what was wrong. It was a complex little thing actually, little slot loading mechanism didn't want to come out of its shell (there were about 3 different compartments to open to get to it) and then it was locked down itself

After doing that I noticed there was a little rubber belt working the whole loading mechanism jammed inside its holder. I freed it and didn't screw back the screw so hard as it was before.

It then worked fine... but CDROM drives, like most things, are much easier to take apart than to fix back together, trust me!

yes, things like that, they always seem to literally fall apart, and then when its time to put it all back together, you dont know whats where and when you finally figure it out, it usually doesnt want to go in quietly!

I've come across this problem a few times. Sometimes if you right-click on the drive in My Computer and choose Eject, that does the job and clears the glitch.

So get him to try software eject and see if that helps.

Tried everything, however as I said this was a MECHANICAL fault (the belt was jammed inside) so it made noises and the computer THOUGHT that the CD had been ejected (it couldn't be read anymore) until I pressed the button on the drive and it allowed the computer to read it

I think there a number of programs like it. I worked on an IBM Thinkpad right after the first of the year that took random screendump shots and sent them back to the company that the guy worked for. It' not really a big deal but it seems odd to me that a company would put so much effort into monitoring their employees. But I guess to each his own.
