View Full Version : S-video out, and audio questions

TVout on video card, with S-video. Got the S-video to RCA adapter. All is well.
TV is about 50 feet from the computer, and I want to hook it up.
Questions are, run S-video direct to the VCR, then into TV (VCR has S-video in, TV does not), or convert to RCA, and run direct to TV?
Audio, 50' is a long ways, run R and L channels that distance with standard cable(micro stereo to RCA), use shielded, or make something cheap out of speaker wire?
TV also does not have audio in. Run audio through VCR and video direct, or ???
I just wanna watch DVD's on the TV without buying a separate DVD player.
Does this make any sense?
What's my cheapest option?

Hi reboot,

Just some food for though. If you have to buy wiring to make a 50' run, you may want to consider a stand alone DVD. I just picked up a KLH from Costco for $69 US.

It does DVDs, but also MP3s, VCDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and Photo CDS. Heck, I can even view the directories of a CD I burned that backed up my digital camera folders without any conversion !!

The last time I bought wiring to make about a 50' run, the supplies cost me about the same!

Try and stick with the S-Video all the way. You can get a 50 ft cable here for 15 bucks along with other fittings if you need them.

Would be nice to just buy a DVD/VCD/CDR/etc., but the powers that be (wife) are not terribly happy with the purchase of the DVD for the computer already.
I'll just make it work.
S-video all the way sounds fine, cabling isn't that much...
Any forseeable problems with running ordinary speaker wire for the L and R audio channels?

Run the audio using standard (but well shielded) RCA for as long a distance as possible. Don't run speaker wire that far -- the shielding won't hold out for that distance.

OK, I've got about 500 feet of RG58-u coax, the kind used for mobile (CB radio) antennas. How would that work for shielded cable? I would think it's excellent.

RG-58 would be about as good as it'll get for shielding -- well, RJ-59 and RG-6 would be better....:)
