I am about to climb the walls.

I reinstalled Win98 and have got everything running again except for one irksome thing with my printer. The drivers that I downloaded from HP are a complete install program not just drivers. I have used the install program and the printer is installed. I can print with it and the printer shows up under the printers folder. The problem is that win98 refuses to recognize it and keeps finding it as new hardware every time I boot up.

I know for a fact that I have figured this out before but this time I have been whooped. I cant for the life of me remember how I did it or in what order.

Hi Azgir,

I get that message if my printer is on while the computer is booting up. I just press cancel and go on. I usually leave the printer off if I'm not using it.

Oh, is it a parallel port or USB printer?

The standard routine for installing an HP printer.
If it is parallel, connect the printer to the computer, turn it on and then turn on the computer. Cancel the hardware found window and then install the HP software. Restart the computer and Windows should install the printer.
If it is USB, install the software and then shutdown the computer. Connect the printer to the computer, but leave the printer OFF. Turn on the computer and when you get finished loading all the tasks and are on the desktop, turn on the printer. Windows will then detect it as a USB device and install it.

That is what I have been doing morris and am pretty sure it is the way I have gotten it to work in the past. This time the puter just seems to be disagreeable.

Oh, and yes it is a parallel printer.
