I'm trying to set up my own home network between 3 PCs.
Currently I can get 2 of the PCs to communicate fine. The problem is when I plug the 3rd one into the Hub. In fact the problem occurs with just that PC plugged into the hub too. The NIC in the troublesome PC is an Aprotech AE-310B 10/100M Fast ethernet adapter, running Windows 98. My Hub is a 5-Port 3COM Office Connect Dual speed hub.
The problem is as follows, when I connect the PC and turn it on everything is fine, green light on the PC and green light on the hub. It stays like this up until just before I get a desktop, on the Windows98 is starting up screen, at this point the green light goes off on the NIC and the hub starts flashing lights in this order:
First flashes green on the port (green indicates 100M connection)
Then flashes orange on the 100M collision light
Then flashes orange on the port either once or twice (orange indicates 10M connection)

It then cycles through this sequence repeatedly.

I have no idea what the problem is so any help would be much appreciated.

Hey ajm1 I would try a NIC out of one of the computers, sounds like your getting some chatter from that NIC.

Ya, the NIC from one of the other machines works, but the NIC that was causing problems doesn't seem to work in any of them.
Is it a faulty one or can I fix the problem?

For the price, toss it, and get a new NIC.

You can get a 10/100 NIC, starting around $5 shipped on pricewatch, I wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to figure out what's wrong with that one. :) I use Netgear NICs, they are around $15, and I've had excellent luck with them.
