hello, and thanks for those that help me learn. i've just built my second computer, got a crossover cable and tried to network it with my other comp. comp2 is running win2k server, comp1 win2k. i half expected windows to recognize the new connection automatically but it didn't. so i ran the network wizard on both, setting them both as hosts and still couldn't connect. so i assigned them both ip addresses and tried ping, unsuccessfully. i don't know what to do next. i also uninstalled and then reinstalled the drivers for both NICs. if i highlight the LAN icon it tells me the cable is unplugged.
what am i missing?
when i ran the Network Wizard it only gave me the option to choose between Com1, Com2, LPT1 for devices. comp1 has LAN on the mobo while the NIC in comp2 is a PCI card.
thanks

Hi,
Are network adapters (the onboard on pc 1 and the pci card on pc 2) installed properly (drivers and all)? What network protocols do you have installed on each pc? When you ran the network wizard on which pc were you only given the LPT, COM1 and COM2 options, or was it both? Let me know what you can come up with and hope this helps.

First make sure the drivers for the NICs are installed (I would assume they are), and TCP/IP is set up (I would assume it is). Now set one computer's IP to 192.168.0.1, and the other computer to 192.168.0.2. First check to see if they can ping themselves, then check to see if they can ping each other.

the network adapters are recognized and functioning properly according to the device manager. protocols:
tcp/ip, betBEUI, file and printer sharing for microsoft networks, client for microsoft networks.
both pcs only offer LPT, COM1 and COM2.
thanks for the quick response

neither computer can ping itself, but the loopback ping works.

The first thing to do is try another crossover cable.

Goto start..run. Type in "CMD". In the command prompt type in " ipconfig /all " and hit enter. Right click in it and click "Mark". Highlight what it outputed and hit Ctrl-C to copy it so you can paste it in a reply. It should give us some useful information to help with the problem.

Hey mcSlack here's a good website that may help:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/
Also you said both comps are host doesn't one of them have to be a client? and one host, not really sure. wish I could remember how I fixed mine, I got them hooked up to my router now so I no longer have them hooked as a network,
You are sure it's a crossover cable??

hi Gladiator,
i bought a $15 NIC and put it in the case with the onbard LAN and am now connected. i haven't checked in the BIOS yet to see if it was maybe disabled but will eventually and then maybe i'll have a cheap extra NIC around, no problem with that.
thanks for the help. i love this site.
