I got a digital camera the other day that can shoot videos (small and low quality but anyway). They are stored in Quicktime format. The software CD that came with the camera included a QT player but I would like to be able to convert them to MPG format in case I want to share any video with someone else. It is far more likely that other people will have the ability to play MPG files than QT.

What can I use to convert these videos?

TMPGEnc is a very good MPEG Encoder. It does MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 encoding from any source you have the codec for.

The problem is Quicktime's codec isn't resident in your system like other codecs. It's apart of the stream or within the player -- Apple's way of being very protective of their creation.

One of the few products that I'm aware of that will do this is Discreet's Cleaner. But that's a $500 program used by video professionals. Most other products have been squashed by Apple. But I do remember a program called Qt2Mpeg -- did a search on Google and actually found a link that still works: ftp://x2ftp.oulu.fi/pub/msdos/programming/convert/qt2mpeg.zip

Now I also seem to recall that this little guy runs in MS-DOS mode, but I'm not sure.

Good luck.

Stay tuned - I have a friend who took a 30 second movie with his digicam last summer, the native format is Quick Time. He used *something* to convert it to an AVI which played in Windows Media Player using a DivX codec - and it wound up about 1/4 the filesize too. I'll post back here when I find out what exactly he used.
