My friend and I want to exchange some big files with our labtops....by using an Ethernet cable....is it possible for him to send the files directly through the Ethernet cable without using a network....If so....it would be great if you guys could provide me with some step by step instructions.....THANKS!!!!

Biggest part is you have to have a cross-over cable. They'll know what you mean at the store, just ask for ethernet cross-over cable. Plug your 2 NIC cards via this cross-over cable and if you see the link light on both, the rest is all just software settings.
What OS is on the laptops??
Easiest thing is just to install netbeui on both, connect tham up, enable sharing on the Folders/Devices you want and share away. This is found / installed thru right clicking Network Neighborhood and properties and install> protocol.

I cant just use regular ethernet cables to exchange the files?....Ummmm....one is Windows 98 and the other is Windows XP.....Thanks

No, you have to use a crossover cable to connect directly when not using a switch/hub/router.
If you don't want to buy one just take yours down to a decent computer shop and have them turn it into a crossover cable. Have them put a yellow boot on it or mark it with some yellow tape so it doesn't get confused with a regular patch cable down the road.
