I have always used Acid and Sound Forge for my music. I know a professional that uses Pro Tools, but I can't seem to find it anywhere, and when I was at their webpage I got the impression you can only use it with their hardware. Is that true?

ProTools is mac only software, it's not available for PC.

No, it's the free version thats limited to 8 channel audio and 48 midi tracks, but it's a good way to see if you want to spend the money.

Don't get me started on ProTools. I hate it with every thread on my body. I just finished a build for a buddy that was a complete ProTools system -- around $36,000 went into this thing and for what he spent, I can do on my studio's system with other software (Steinberg Nuendo in this case) for 1/3 the cost. But...he's compatable with the industry which is his need. And that's why he went with ProTools -- because it was the first at what it does so now even though it's a dog, it's the defacto standard for professionals.

If you've got Acid for your multitrack and Sound Forge for your editng your all set. The only thing you may want to look at is a more versitile multitrack package like Vegas from Sonic Foundy, Logic Audio from EMagic, Cubase SX from Steinberg or Sonar from Cakewalk.
