my friend has 2 computers. He connected them with crossover cable. The xp machine can c the 98 and can transfer files. when u go on the 98 it can c the xp but cannot acces it. Whats going on?

Has he tried using NetBEUI between the two systems?

no he used the xp networking wizard to set it up

screw the cable just get a cheap router and put them in a workgroup that will solve any problem you have.

You simply have to add a user account to the XP box with the same logon name and password that's used on the 98 box.

The router and workgroup idea I do not see the advantage there. You can still put in same workgroup with direct PC to PC. Why buy a router unless you need one to share internet connection or wan connection. Basically a router links two dissimilar networks togother, and the hub or switch part of the router will do no better with just 2 pc's than if you direct connect the 2.
