Needing a new printer...need suggestions please.

Hello

I am going thru the process of a new computer build and would like to get a decent printer for the new system.

I am not going to be using the printer for anything very important, just printing word documents and internet stuff.

So I don't need state of the art, just something dependable that will out perform my old HP 690 series.

The HP 900's have been largely discontinued, but you might still find a few around on a close out. They're good printers.

I thought I'd go against the tide for once and purchase an Epson Photo 830. I needed this for photo print outs to go nicely with my new digicam.

Either way, I am very pleased with it's speed and quality of print, plus the cartridges don't cost a fortune like the HP ones do.

I've always bought HPs - I really like the 843c I have now. But If I were in the market for one, I'd go with the Canon I320 Color Bubble Jet Printer. I like to save money.

The epson Photo 830 cost £89.00 since I don't know where you guys shop in the States The closest thing I found was the Epson Photo 820 @ $82.93 at PC World.com

HP 960cse - list price is $199 and it comes with a 1 year warranty. It uses the standard 45 and 78 cartridges, not the new photo inks.

Do NOT under any circumstances buy a Lexmark x63. Pure evil. Just generally, don't buy an all-in-one.

I'd recomend just going into staples, best buy, fry's, target, wherever you go and get the cheapest thing you can find with USB and XP compatibility (even if you don't have XP now, you might upgrade). Everything seems to be pretty decent nowadays so no matter what you end up with you should be fine.

i would definitely stick with hp. i agree that if you can find the 960, you should go with it. there new basic model out is the 3820, it's a good printer...but it only uses the 15 black ink cartridges, which are 2 bucks more than the 45 and you only get half the ink! but i would definitely go with an hp.

I don't see the need for USB compatibility unless you don't have a parallel port. Even a slow parallel port can send a print job faster than the printer can print it. I'm not anywhere near ready to kill the legacy ports on a PC. The more devices you put on the USB, the flakier it gets, save it for devices that MUST use it like scanners and webcams.

Parallel cords are so big and clunky and are usually just 3 inches too short. USB is more versatile, plus a lot of the superthin laptops and newer laptops are leaving the legacy ports out altogether, USB ensures that your printer will work on them.
