Been at it all day! The modem is installed on com port 2 with IRQ 3. There are no conflicts in the device manager, in diagnostic\more info it shows everything as should be. When the modem is queeried that's okay. Yet when I test it(using quick link modem test) it say "there are no working modems installed on this computer,check connections and try again" I've deleted and reinstalled com ports and modem many times.The modem works on my other machine. What next???

Is COM2 disabled in BIOS? If not your software may be getting the actual physical port when it tries to access your modem.
Does it work with Hyperterminal or Dialup Networking? Winmodems don't work in DOS........

Well...I'm throwing in the towel. I can get it to dial out by using the phone dialer in the fax program. After that its at square one. An external modem is looking real nice about now!!! If no go tomorrow,It's towel time. Thanx to those who replied.

It's a us robotics 33.6 internal winmodem.

boy==do I sympathize with you!!!
Ive spend 8 hopurs trying to configure winmodems..seems some computers dont like 'em...for exampole-in this IBM Aptiva, last weekl--I treied 6 different ones before 1 finally worked.
I HATE win9x cuase it usually says such things as "your modem has been installed successfully"--and--indicates no conflicts in device mngr--YET the damn things wont work (i usually get the "cant open port" syndrome...)
REBOOT has a procedure for remoiving all comports and modems from computer (via dev mangr)> then physicvally removing modem frm computer>rebooting>letting comput (Windoze) reinstall ports..then U reinstall modem and let windoze find/reinstrall it..im not sure this is the correct sequence..so check his web site (Jim and Sue's fee files)...
U can try playing with COM 2 in BIOS but this has never worked for me.
suggest externalk modem-or--if U want internal--go for the Diamond Supre Express, making sure it is the hardware(isa slot-controller chip on circuitboard of modem etc)..again-REBOOT gives a good suggestion on this...
Too bad U werent with me today--I happened on a yardsale where soeone sold me a US Robotics Courier "V everything" in the box with all manuals and serial cable for $10!!!--its 33K but seems to download as fast as my 56K winmodem!!!--I wonder if it can be bios falshed over to V90???
Anyway-suggest external modem (they are hardware non winmodems 99% of time so u avoid loading cpu, and avoid setup problems)--or--the Supra Express ISA internal version(costs about $59-69 on their site--make sure U DONT buy their cheaper version (its a winmodem..costs about $35 or so)..
HTH
PS: a "quick and dirty" way to differentiate win vs "hard" mopdems is..90% of PCI modems R "Win" ("soft") varoety (avoid)/ SA modems are generally "hard" or desirable non-windo type..also--a "hard" modem will be physically larger (*has the controller chips etc on board)--vs--"win" ("soft") versions will be smaller and have fewer chips on circuitboard..and the "win" modems will be cheaper (usually $15-35) vs "Hard" types will rune $50-100+...also--"Win" modems will usually say (on the box or in the accompanying manual) they are "designed for win9x", and will not have jumpers on their circuitboard.

I finally gave up.I'll use a external modem and avoid the headache!
eshort: US Robotics used to sell a flash upgrade to 56k for the Couriers for $60 - but they have discontinued this. You now have probably the best 33.6 modem ever made - and that's all it will ever be. That modem cost $200 when it was current.
dakota: if you use an external, make sure your serial port has a 16550 UART or better. Most Pentium motherboards qualify. If you are not certain, get another internal ISA modem that's 100% hardware controlled and has jumpers on it.

It's definately an external modem in the future. Thanks to all who replied to my post.
