I have some misc phots that I want to share with family. I dl Serv-U (http://www.serv-u.com/) and went through the setup wizard. I created an account and tried to use it on the same pc. I went to ftp://192.168.1.100 and I could get in. I then tried on another comp on the same network. It worked again. I then called a family member in Oklahoma on AOL and I asked them to try it. They said that nothing came up. I then called a family member in The Colony and the same thing happened to them. (also on AOL).
I then went to IP Chicken (http://www.ipchicken.com) and used that Ip address for the "Domain IP address". With that adress I get an error that says, "Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder. Details: A connection with the server could not be extablished" I get that on both of my comp's. But I can still use 192.168.1.100. I am on a cable connection behind Linksys router BEFSR41.
What can I do to get this working?
Thanks in advance.

You need to forward port 21 to the computer that has the ftp server on it. To do that, type 192.168.1.1, go to advanced, forwarding, and put 21~21 and put it to the ip of the computer with the server on it. that should make it work.

Incidentally your IP address is not 192.168.1.100 .. that is the LAN address assigned to you by your router. Check your router's configuration page for the system status for your WAN IP address.
And yes you will need to do what ^dan has suggested

Thanks GSXdan and Statica for you quick replies. When I try to use WAN IP address, ftp://12.xxx.xxx.xxx the browser stops responding. If I type the address in the address bar with out the ftp:// I get this (http://www.shackspace.com/~weezer_rocks@shackmail.com/PC%20Mech.bmp). None of the usernames and pass words i made for the FTP work, the username and password I used to change the router settings doesn't work either.
Because the port isn't forwarded, the router isn't passing requests on port 21 to your machine behind it.
You gotta open up port 21 as GSXDan said.

can smartftp let you add your own ftp server? I got a cable modem and I want people to download files off my computer, instead of me having to send one by one to individuals over instand messengers.

SmartFTP doesn't make anything easier, Serv-U is easy enough to use. The problem lies in the configuration. Firstly, you need to find out your WAN IP addres. Your other address, 192.168.1.100 is a LAN or local address, used for your local network. After that, you also need to set up your router to forward port 21 to your computer, 192.168.1.100.

I did this.
I can log on to my ftp via my wanIP. I can see my two folders I put in. I can see the list of the photos. When I try to click on a picture I get a "This page cannot be displayed" error. But if I go to the folder where they are stored on my hard drive I can see the pictures.

Ok, try this, go to http://www.download.com/
type in "smartftp"
download it,
type you username/password
make port 21
type in "http://www.yourname.com"
press enter
and it should log you in and allow you to edit your homepage.

SmartFTP allows you to upload the files for downloading and just post a link to your document for editing.
e.g.: http://www.yourname.com/downloads/aim.exe
if you upload aim.exe to your server, then you can distribute it from your website.
Catch my drift?

I might be doing this all wrong. I was hoping my family members could get online and look at the pictures I have on my hard drive, by loging on to the ftp on my computer. I DO NOT have a website, do I need one? I made a separate folder for the photos. I have different user names/passwords. I set all of the user home directories to the location of the photos, and locked them there. I have port 21 forwarded to my local Ip address. I thought Serve-U could do this for me but I might be wrong. Any other suggestions that would do what I want to do. I have smart FTP but I thought it was just for uploading to a website. Thanks in advance.

Do you have AOL or Hotmail?
If hotmail, get a domain name
if not, great, u can send the pictures through the e-mail.
