how can I make calls online?

I want to place calls from my pc. I downloaded software that allows it , but they require money up front in case you go over your 10 minute limit. Anyone know of a good set up? I over heard someone talking about a program that they use to talk while gaming online.

I used Dialpad extensively. But they are no longer free calls and I haven't been able to find on that is.

You need cable or DSL for good results. I did some when I was on dialup but it was choppy.

I don't know of any free PC to phone services that still exist, Dialpad isn't free any more and Net2Phone never was. PC to PC is easy, you can use voice over instant messenger services or Netmeeting. I gave up on Dialpad when they put the 5 minute call limit in and got a cell phone plan with 3500 night and weekend minutes.

Hey GLC, quick question about PC to PC instant messaging voice chat: As far as hardware, basically, you would only need a microphone, right? And of course computer speakers.

Is MS Messenger a good choice? Basically, I would like to talk to my parents in CO, but they have dial-up. Will that be a problem? Will the audio be garbage?

You need a mike and preferably a headset, and a full duplex sound card. Voice over dialup is acceptable but can be a bit flaky, kinda like a digital cell call that keeps dropping in and out.

I may be wrong, but I've been told that the voice over Yahoo Messenger is better than the others.

My system uses on board sound, but I do have a cable connection and a headset. What exactly is "full duplex"? The messenger set up may help for some of my calls, but I was really looking for an alternative to a land line phone. We disconnected ours and went cellular but the minutes really add up. We make hardly any calls and its unbelievable how quickly it adds up.

Full duplex is two way traffic. In single duplex, you cain't begin talking until the other party finishes. Whoever is talking siezes the line and has control. Full duplex lets you "butt-in" and talk without waiting for the line to free and turn around.

If you are looking for a real alternative to a land line phone, compare the packages from Net2Phone, Dialpad, and the other voice over IP services. As already mentioned, there are no free rides any more.
