My buddy who has a classic athlon system that i had built for him is giving him problems when trying to use his cable modem. He is on the net for about 10 minutes and it cuts him off, when he goes into network under control panels it keeps prompting him to load those three files (protman.exe
protman.dos and ndishlp.sys. All i know is that he is running win 98 SE as for what network card and such he is using i don't know. I had him uninstall the drivers for the card and reinstall it, had him run SFC and no problems there, he even said he got those particular files that are erroring and replaced them off of the Install CD....does anyone know what is going on, there is no irq conflicts, so i'm stumped as well as he is. He just wants to reload windows, but there has got to be a better way..Help me please, TIA
Mike

I don't know much about cable modem setups, but I really don't think reinstalling Windows is the answer (usually ever). Especially if the system was working fine before the cable guy got there.

Maybe it's path problem with protman.exe protman.dos & ndishlp.sys. Maybe those files aren't in the proper folder.
Maybe they installed a nic with questionable compatibality.
Maybe the nic was questionably installed.

From what I've researched, those files are associated with running DOS mode networking in Windows.

I would tend to call the cable co. and complain.

yeah i don 't know what is up, i'm gonna go visit him next week, will pull the card, remove the software and re install it, he did call the cable company, but they said its on his end...

Don't know anything other than what I would tell the cable co. what they could do with their card, software, and service if that is their attitude.
